From Publishers Weekly
Drawing inspiration from the Buddha's awakening, Bernhard addresses this ancient tradition's core ideas in a wise, gentle guide to reducing suffering. Her previous book (How to Be Sick) described her efforts to adapt skillfully to a chronic, life-changing illness. Here she explores Buddhism's heart to show how we have the potential to awaken to a peace and well-being that are not dependent on whether a particular experience is joyful or sorrowful. With assurance the author blends clear explanations, examples, and easy practices (such as the tracing exercise to identify the source of dissatisfaction) from her circumscribed life to explore how wisdom, mindfulness, and open-heartedness can improve well-being. The relevance of classic topics such as the three marks of existence (impermanence, no fixed self, and suffering) is deftly investigated. Her discussion of tanha (desire) teases out the difference between wholesome aspirations and harmful craving, a sometimes thorny topic for students of Buddhism. While the market is saturated with good introductions to Buddhism, Bernhard excels at demonstrating from personal knowledge that the Buddha's promises to ease suffering aren't just empty words. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Expanding on the lessons of mindfulness and meditation found in her well-received How to Be Sick (2010), Bernhard switches gears to focus on the venerable and often intimidating idea of “awakening.” The author begins with the core idea that life is a string of experiences engendered by and producing suffering. From here Bernhard walks her readers through the concepts used in Buddhism to accept and engage this state of being and, in doing so, hopefully become more “awake” to the reality of life. The book is organized around three fundamental tenets of the Buddha’s teachings—wisdom, mindfulness, and open-mindedness—with each section broken into chapters that examine these ideas and offer practices that help incorporate them into daily life. Bernhard presents all of this in an easy, straightforward manner that will reassure readers who are less familiar with Buddhist tradition. While this is an ideal book for people beginning to explore Buddhism or alternative methods to handling life’s difficulties, this is also a useful book for the more experienced Buddhist or spiritual practitioner looking to revisit fundamental concepts of their practice. --Taina Lagodzinski

I know how to be sick, now I gotta learn how to Wake Up
By J.L.H.
I read "How to Be Sick" and found it to be the most user-friendly beginner's guide to secular buddhist philosophy and meditation, and a wonderful support for someone with a chronic illness as well. I've read it a couple of times, and for Xmas sent it to my mom.

Now that I'm more or less used to how to be sick, I need to Wake Up. Toni Bernhard's books are great!

Practical mindfulness
By DesertKat
Toni's first book How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers was a life-changer for me. It helped me come to grips with a sudden-onset, serious, and chronic disease in ways that were sensible and compassionate. I found her first book so helpful that I bought a Kindle copy right after buying my paperback and I also gave copies to friends in similar situations.

Naturally, I looked forward to Toni's second book. She has not let me down. How to Wake Up deals with situations, the joys and the sorrows, we all face in everyday life. The title offers itself as a guide to "navigating the joys and sorrows," and Toni does this deftly and with much compassion and clarity.

In How to Wake Up, Toni gives practical suggestions and steps toward mindful living, under any and all kinds of situations that may come along in our daily lives. I especially appreciated her discussion of impermanence in life and a variety of ways to approach this constant companion on the journey. She speaks to the very real fears and uncertainties of this life as a person who is walking the path alongside us. I recommend this book to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. How to Wake Up contains gems for anyone interested in living with more clarity, mindfulness, wisdom, and open-heartedness.

Greaaaaat!
By Thomas De Mann
I have been a Buddhist practitioner since 2000. I know everything that Toni wrote in this book. However, it was the way that she presented it is what I found most important. The book was not written with any religious jargon. Toni said what she sincerely believed in and meant in simple everyday language. I found this book most inspiring. It has given me a new motivation to wake-up.

I highly recommend this book to any person disregarding what their religious preference is. It is a good introduction or reminder to us all.
