ANDREW GUTMANN is the creator of www.ibankingfaq.com, one of the most widely visited websites focused on the topic of investment banking. He has developed and taught finance and investment banking classes for a number of institutions, including the Institute for Finance, the firm that he founded. For the past five years, he has also been a career coach at Columbia Business School, where he advises and mentors MBA students interested in investment banking careers. Great resource in learning the ins and outs of investment banking. The book covers everything you can need and imagine from preparing for the interview to what the lifestyle and an investment banker is once inside. I believe that the book can be best used as a reference guide like textbook. Helpful, simply written and valuable. Use this in conjunction with the Vault guide and you will know almost as much about banking as the person interviewing you.

I know how to be sick, now I gotta learn how to Wake Up

I read "How to Be Sick" and found it to be the most user-friendly beginner's guide to secular buddhist philosophy and meditation, and a wonderful support for someone with a chronic illness as well. I've read it a couple of times, and for Xmas sent it to my mom.

Now that I'm more or less used to how to be sick, I need to Wake Up. Toni Bernhard's books are great!

Practical mindfulness

Toni's first book How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers was a life-changer for me. It helped me come to grips with a sudden-onset, serious, and chronic disease in ways that were sensible and compassionate. I found her first book so helpful that I bought a Kindle copy right after buying my paperback and I also gave copies to friends in similar situations.

Naturally, I looked forward to Toni's second book. She has not let me down. How to Wake Up deals with situations, the joys and the sorrows, we all face in everyday life. The title offers itself as a guide to "navigating the joys and sorrows," and Toni does this deftly and with much compassion and clarity.

In How to Wake Up, Toni gives practical suggestions and steps toward mindful living, under any and all kinds of situations that may come along in our daily lives. I especially appreciated her discussion of impermanence in life and a variety of ways to approach this constant companion on the journey. She speaks to the very real fears and uncertainties of this life as a person who is walking the path alongside us. I recommend this book to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. How to Wake Up contains gems for anyone interested in living with more clarity, mindfulness, wisdom, and open-heartedness.

Greaaaaat!

I have been a Buddhist practitioner since 2000. I know everything that Toni wrote in this book. However, it was the way that she presented it is what I found most important. The book was not written with any religious jargon. Toni said what she sincerely believed in and meant in simple everyday language. I found this book most inspiring. It has given me a new motivation to wake-up.

I highly recommend this book to any person disregarding what their religious preference is. It is a good introduction or reminder to us all.

Good examples, but hard to follow

Mecahnics and Control of Robots provides a ``how-to'' introduction to robotics. Unfortunately there are several problems with the text. Some of the writing is cumbersome and hard to follow, and several fundamental items, such as homogeneous transformations, robot dynamics and control, are not adequately explained. It may be worth having for the examples if for no other reason.

About the Author

Dustin Adkison

Dustin Adkison is an active member of the IBM Cognos community. He began his career in Business Intelligence at one of the premier Cognos customers, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. After a short period, he became one of the Cognos administrators of a very large Cognos implementation as well as the training coordinator for all Cognos needs. While at BCBST, Dustin began to shape his skills in Cognos Report, which later became IBM Cognos 8 and IBM Cognos 10.

Dustin soon joined the Cognos consulting industry with Market Street Solutions (a Tennessee-based IBM Premier Partner that focuses on IBM Cognos). There he worked as both a consultant and a sales and presales resource. Dustin was an active member of the Atlanta and Tennessee Cognos User Groups during this time. He also further developed his skills around IBM Cognos and began presenting to various user communities.

For the last 5 years, Dustin has worked for BrightStar Partners and BSP Software, which are now owned by Avnet. He manages a team of sales resources, provides sales and technical sales support, and sets the direction for the sales team. Dustin is currently an active member of the Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, St. Louis, and Michigan User Groups. He has been a speaker at each of these User Groups in the past. In addition, he has presented at the Chattanooga, Nashville, Cincinnati, Columbus, Victoria, Toronto, and Vancouver User Groups as a guest.

As one of the leaders of the adoption of Cognos Express, Dustin was asked to present both on a panel and as an individual at IBM Information on Demand (IOD) and on a cfo.com webcast. Dustin has written about the importance of soft skills in the BI industry and has had his writings featured on various forums.

For the past two years, Dustin has been honored as an IBM Champion, an award that is given to the information leaders within the IBM space.

The book gives great information about the IBM Cognos tool. It also explains business intelligence concepts,reporting,advance data mining details very well. It is a must for anyone who work on any BI tool and specifically IBM Cognos.

Cognos developers really love it! Dustin has explained Query Studio, Mobile and Framework Manager in a real nice easy way which you can expertize in just over a week.

For Cognos administrators, a good book to have it in your shelves. Here you can learn performance tuning within Cognos and what I see a missing links are the troubleshooting steps and IBM support coverage part of it. But this can easily be got in IBM product manual.

referring to this book and making scarf

My wife loves knitted scarfs and I wanted to make one and gift her on her b’day. Though I never made any, I know basics of knitting because my mom was into knitting and when I was young I used to help her. So, when I was searching for knitting books, this one was free. So, got it.

This is very detailed book on knitting. I’m referring this book and making scarf. I’m almost done with it. I found this book is easy to follow. If you love knitting and want learn, you can refer to this one. Author has provided illustrations as well. Only thing is, author has to take care of formatting of this book but contents are really good.

I hope my wife likes my gift :).

I really love these sorts of books

I really love these sorts of books. So, when I saw a huge collection like this, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to get in on the fun. These books teach you everything you need to know from the bottom up on these different topics. I sometimes find it hard learning this sort of skill. However, with the step by step instructions and plenty of pictures I managed to follow along. I always saw other people making beautiful things and never thought that I could do it to. Well, that was until I read through these books!

Employing a lighthearted tone, the Heaths apply those selfsame techniques to create an enjoyable read. They analyze such narratives as urban legends and advertisements to discover what makes them memorable. The authors provide a simple mnemonic to remember their stickiness formula, and the basic principles may be applied in any situation where persuasiveness is an asset. The book is a fast read peppered with exercises to test the techniques proposed. Some examples act as pop quizzes and engage readers in moments of self-reflection. The book draws on examples from teachers, scientists, and soldiers who have been successful at crafting memorable ideas, from the well-known blue eye/brown eye exercise conducted by an Iowa elementary school teacher as an experiential lesson in prejudice following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., to conversations among Xerox repairmen. Chip and Dan Heath—a Stanford professor and an education entrepreneur, respectively—attempt to determine why one idea succeeds while another fails. What could have been a dry marketing textbook is, instead, a generally engaging narrative generously endowed with anecdotes and instructive sidebars. The Wall Street Journal expressed annoyance at the profusion of personal stories, while the Washington Post cited some problems with the overall framework. Overall, however, Made to Stick is a worthy addition to the spate of recent books that explain why we do the things we do and how this self-knowledge can be used more effectively. "Anyone interested in influencing others—to buy, to vote, to learn, to diet, to give to charity or to start a revolution—can learn from this book" (Washington Post).

Do Your Ideas Gain Traction and “Stick” or Are They Cast Aside?

Brothers Chip and Dan Heath in their New York Time’s best-selling book, “Made to Stick,” explore the stickiness of an idea. Those of us who spend time in the start-up world marvel at why one idea gains traction and other, seemingly better ideas, fall to wayside. The Heath brothers provide insights on this phenomenon and provide help for those bent on creating ideas that are “sticky.”

“Sticky” ideas are understandable, memorable, and effective in changing thought or behavior. The six underlying SUCCESs principles for making things “stick” are:

• Simplicity – Simple=core+compact. Find and share your core idea; make it simple and profound. “It’s the economy, stupid” (Clinton campaign, 1992) is a great example. The inverted pyramid approach which is used in journalism is a good tool to get your headline.
• Unexpectedness - We need to violate people’s expectations to get them to pay attention. Break existing patterns to get people’s attention. Southwest flight attendants use humor (there are two doors on either side if you need to jump!) to hold attention when giving the pre-flight safety announcement. Humans adapt incredibly quickly to patterns. Consistent sensory stimulation makes us tune out.
• Concreteness – You must help people understand and remember. Don’t use abstractions. Make your core idea concrete. Use common knowledge to make your idea stick. Our greatest villain is the Curse of Knowledge or when we assume everyone knows what we know or shares our unique perspective. We have to see it from the “others” point of view. We forget what other people do not know and slip into “abstractspeak.” Boeing’s criteria for a new plane was not “the best passenger plane in the world” but one that can seat 131 passengers and land on Runway 2-22 at LaGuardia. No ambiguity here.
• Credibility – Help people believe by making sure your idea carries its own credentials. Pass the “Sinatra Test.” Examples offered include “Where’s the Beef?” and Reagan’s “Are you better off today?” Both were credible and resonated as they were based on common shared knowledge.
• Emotional– Make people care by using the power of association, appealing to self-interest, or identity. “People donate to Rokia more than a wide swath of Africa”; “Honoring the Game” versus the use of the word ‘sportsmanship’; “I’m in charge of morale” as stated by a US military cook in Iraq. We must make people feel something to get them to care. We are wired to feel things, not abstractions.
• Stories – Stories get people to act on our ideas. Stories act as a kind of mental flight simulator, preparing us to respond more quickly and effectively. Stories are told and retold because they contain wisdom. The Healths provide what they view are the three basic story plots – the Challenge Plot, The Connection Plot, and the Creativity Plot. Stories can almost single-handedly defeat “The Curse of Knowledge.” I have been involved in a ministry for people in career-transition for over fifteen years. We consistently advise those in-transitions to create stories to highlight their skills and experience when interviewing. It is well understood that interviewers will mostly remember your comportment and more importantly, your stories.

A chapter is devoted to each principle with the authors providing context for clarity and understanding, examples, and tools to guide the development of a “sticky” idea.

The Curse of Knowledge is what escapes most when trying to pitch an idea. It is the natural psychological tendency that consistently gets in the way of our ability to successfully create “sticky ideas” using these principles. Once we know something, we find it hard to imagine what it was like not to know. This knowledge has “cursed” us and makes it difficult to share our knowledge with others. It is because we cannot readily re-create our listeners state of mind. When a CEO discusses “unlocking shareholder value,” there is a tune playing in his head that the employees can’t hear. On the other hand, President John F. Kennedy knew that opaque, abstract missions don’t captivate and inspire people so he concretely challenged the country with “landing on the moon by the end of the decade.”

Throughout the book, the authors present “Idea Clinics” which illustrate how an idea can be made stickier. Example: ”Do smokers really need to understand the workings of the lungs in order to appreciate the dangers of smoking?”

The book itself is “sticky’ filled with stories of normal people facing normal problems who did an amazing thing simply by applying these principles, even if they were not aware that they were doing this. They distinguish themselves by crafting ideas that made a difference.

The Info in the Book Stuck and Helped

~I am happy with this book because a) it gave me highly usable information that I did not have, 2) concepts are given with examples and wording that worked for me; I knew nothing about the subject and now I can function on the subject to the degree I need to, and now have enough knowledge to better search for more, 3) the rationale for all the information is clear, 4) It oriented me to the subject enough to considerably improve my interactions with professionals in the field, 5) It's well written for easy readability, 6) it spared me mistakes I was about to make, 7) I am betting that the resulting changes I am making will improve my business communications with vendors and customers.
~I recommend this book if you are a seller, brander, marketer, speaker, teacher, entertainer, start-up business, established business, parent, or simply the kind of person who never seems to get your point across in a memorable way. This is a practical, useful book, at least for those of us that lack the type of thinking and understanding that these kind of professionals have.

Gold Standard in simply, clearly, and memorably teaching effective communication!

This is a absolute must read for anyone working in the field of communications.

Made to Stick makes some very interesting points about how to not only define our core message, but also communicate it in such a manner that it “sticks” with people. I’d never heard of some of the “urban legends” and other anecdotes and experiments that were shared by the authors, but after one reading you can bet I’ll never forget them.

With respect to the authors' point, I agree that in order to make ones’ message sticky, you must go beyond the abstract and “Curse of Knowledge” in order to make a solid and lasting connection. They present a notable amount of experimental evidence, such as in the example of jurors effected by lots of unnecessary detail.

I particularly agree with the concept of defining the “Commander’s Intent” to arrive at the core of our message, and the importance of then shifting to a focus on how to share and achieve this intent through the various strategies of:
1. Simplicity
2. Unexpectedness
3. Concreteness
4. Credibility
5. Emotions
6. Stories

The concepts taught in this book are quite profound however grossly under applied in business. Many of us often recall and reflect on the best communicators and messages we've been exposed to if life...This book will teach you how to become the successful communicator.
