Alex Payton fixes code for a living. But a small line of code in a Swiss bank's computer propels her into a world of corruption and deceit as she uncovers a bank account opened for a Jewish family before World War II. From her basement cubicle in Zurich, she is drawn to Budapest, New York, and Brazil on a dangerous hunt for the truth.

The account Alex discovers is a Treuhand account, one of many set up to protect Jewish families' identities from Nazi persecutors. This one has been slowly accruing value in a Swiss bank for more than half a century and has remained unclaimed - and undisclosed.

As she searches for clues to the fate of the family, Alex becomes entangled in an international web of treachery and murder. With each step of her investigation, she unknowingly exposes herself - and the lost heirs - to the dangers of revealing secrets that some would kill to protect.

Like an action movie - okay for a first novel.
By J. Lee
Though much lighter than I anticpated, this book was a decent first novel attempt. Here's a summary, and the ups and downs of it to me.

Short Summary: Computer analyst at a Swiss Bank jets around to exotic locales trying to find the rightful heirs to a multi-million dollar swiss trust account that was stashed away there during WWII by a Hungarian Jew. Bad guys want to stop her. Why? And will she be able to get the money back to the right people before she loses her job or her life?

1. The premise and plot line is good, but it's a little like watching a light action movie (which is surprising, given it's financial thriller status.) There's not very much character development, but enough action and tension to keep you turning the pages.

2. It's aptly named - both because of the type of the account and because it does keep you guessing who should really be trusted.

3. Alex, the main character isn't very smart or computer-savvy for someone that's supposed to be a Yale MBA, computer whiz. Her computing skills are largely limited to conducting not-so-great web searches. The other characters don't seem all that bright either. It occassionally gets a bit annoying. (My best example: early on she asks why Jews didn't flee to Israel to escape the Nazis, and her companion explains to her - without sarcasm- that it didn't exist yet!)

Bottom Line: Solid attempt for a debut novel. If you're looking for a light, easy read packed with more action than character development and a different financial sort of twist - than this is it.

Engaging and an easy read...
By Amazon Customer
The author clearly knows his way around international banking. The book is a good relaxing read and keeps you interested enough that you will find yourself picking it up often. I wish that the author did not have to "tell" you everything his characters are thinking and the motive behind those thoughts. Some things should be left up to the reader to deduce and then validate later in the story. Had it not been for this consistent and constant foreshadowing, I would have given this book higher marks. Still, if you like stories that have factual, credible details, you will not be disappointed.

Innocent bet at happy hour
By W. Wirtanen
Making an innocent bet at happy hour starts this financial thriller. Set in the Swiss banking environment, Alex Payton follows the thread of an account she was working with.
The book follows her attempts to find the Holocaust owner of the account.
The author's banking background makes this a good read as the story weaves thru the banking industry in several countries.
I found this an admiral first attempt by the author. At some times I found some scenes were formulaic but still was a good read.
