This book has grown out of a course of lectures I have given at the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule, Zurich. Notes of those lectures, prepared for the most part by assistants, have appeared in German. This book follows the same general plan as those notes, though in style, and in text (for instance, Chapters III, V, VIII), and in attention to detail, it is rather different. Its purpose is to introduce the non-specialist to some of the fundamental results in the theory of numbers, to show how analytical methods of proof fit into the theory, and to prepare the ground for a subsequent inquiry into deeper questions. It is pub� lished in this series because of the interest evinced by Professor Beno Eckmann. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor Carl Ludwig Siegel, who has read the book, both in manuscript and in print, and made a number of valuable criticisms and suggestions. Professor Raghavan Narasimhan has helped me, time and again, with illuminating comments. Dr. Harold Diamond has read the proofs, and helped me to remove obscurities. I have to thank them all. K.C.

old-fashioned material but still very attractive

I bought this book in 1986 and used it since then on a number of occasions to set up elementary problems on number theory for my students; although you will find nothing on RSA algorithms (for example...) inside (book was written in 1968), this book covers a lot of ground in (not so) elementary number theory; it is well organised and I found it very nice to read and work with. The last parts cover Dirichlet's theorem and the prime-number theorem among others (uniform distribution modulo 1 and Kronecker theorem on irrational numbers).

Good companion to Hardy and Wright

This book covers similar material to Hardy and Wright's book. I think Hardy and Wright is stronger, but Chandrasekharan's is still a worthy book. One difference that I've noticed is that I don't remember seeing contour integrals anywhere in Hardy and Wright, while Chandrasekharan uses them in his proof of the reciprocity formula for generalized Gauss sums (he uses the formula for Gauss sums to prove the law of quadratic reciprocity). At first sight some of Chandrasekharan's proofs may seem long, but they are straightforward to follow by a diligent reader. You don't need penetrating insight to be able to follow the proofs.
Since I prefer Hardy and Wright, I think the best use of Chandrasekharan's book is to turn to when you want to see a topic in Hardy and Wright explained in a different way. I think that Chandrasekharan gives a cleaner presentation of Kronecker's theorem than Hardy and Wright do. Also, rather than Selberg's proof of the prime number theorem as given in Hardy and Wright, Chandrasekharan gives a proof using the Wiener-Ikehara theorem in Tauberian theory.

Please do not buy this book. It is too expensive!!!!

This book consists of only about 150 more pages, and the contents
it present just ordinary and can be easily found in other textbooks which is much cheaper!!! I only recommend for those people who think they are rich!! There are many other choices!!!!
