About the Author
Tim Lieuwen is a professor in the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr Lieuwen has edited two books, written seven book chapters and more than 200 papers and holds three patents. Dr Lieuwen previously chaired the combustion and fuels committee of the International Gas Turbine Institute of the ASME. He is currently on the propellants and combustion technical committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and previously served for five years on the AIAA air breathing propulsion technical committee. He has served on a variety of major panels and committees through the National Research Council, the Department of Energy, NASA, the General Accounting Office and the Department of Defense. Dr Lieuwen is interim editor-in-chief of the AIAA Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics series and has served as an associate editor of the Journal of Propulsion and Power, Combustion Science and Technology and the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute. He is a Fellow of the ASME and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award, the ASME Westinghouse Silver Medal, ASME best paper awards, Sigma Xi Young Faculty Award and the NSF CAREER award.

Valuable addition to my bookshelf

Combustion dynamics is inherently an interdisciplinary and multi-physics subject. Students, researchers and practitioners in the field, all stand to benefit from this book. Its' like a one-stop-shop that covers the right mix of fluid-mechanics, acoustics, turbulence and combustion that is required to understand this complex subject
A lot of researchers in the field will point out that there is a "translation problem" between people who do experiments and others who develop analytic models. The former present data without supporting models. The latter write papers that are dense and require multiple readings and the reader often finds himself sourcing a lot more papers to understand certain concepts. In this book, topics are presented from a physical point of view that elucidates complex concepts with all rigor, but with more transparent and self-contained derivations. Like the chapter on using the G-equation to model flame dynamics. I would bet that it is second to none. It also gives experimentalists a lot of ideas to develop models.
In the area of turbulent combustion, I can't think of any book out there that is not written by researchers who do simulations for people who do simulations. This book is a departure from that mould; it benefits both experimentalists and people who do simulations.
Despite having graduated a while ago, I vividly remember the repeated trips I used to make to the library scanning papers from various journals to get my head wrapped around the subject when I started off as a graduate student. Graduate students who start now do not have to go through this effort any more
It's a welcome addition to my bookshelf. I have since moved a lot of papers on my table to the recycle bin.

Excellent book

The subject of combustion dynamics has hitherto been restricted to the realm of research papers. This is an excellent book that fills a much needed gap in the textbook literature on the subject. The book brings together concepts of fluid mechanical instabilities, combustion and acoustics in a very lucid and intuitive fashion that makes it a definitive must read for novice graduate students as well as experienced design engineers. The author has brought to bear his deep understanding of fundamental phenomena whose interaction causes combustion instability, matched with practical experience forged over many successful years of industrial collaboration in this research area to produce a work of outstanding practical and intellectual value. I would strongly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in understanding the dynamical behaviour of unstable combustors and unsteady reacting flows in general.

Highly required book & awesome author

I highly recommend this book to folks in the combustion community. There are very few text books on modern combustion concepts -- this book is the first of its kind and is something the combustion community has been waiting for. Lots of Mechanical/Aerospace students (including myself) looked to read papers and understand the concepts. Tim does a wonderful job in bringing all this together in a book that every combustion engineer needs and I wish I had this book when I was in grad school.
Suitable for a class or for self-study. Fundamental concepts are clearly explained and the material is presented in a very attractive and easy to read way. Tim's significant interactions with the industry has given him an insight for explaining the fundamentals of these complex topics. Being an expert in the field of unsteady combustion coupled with his excellent communication and organization skills, he has written a wonderful book.
