PNW's Best Guide Book for Beginners

This year I suddenly realized how freakin' cool mushrooms are! (Or I'm just getting old.) For the past few months, in addition to scouring EVERYWHERE within a 3 mile radius of my West Seattle home, I've spent countless hours (days) searching Google for identification help, which I'm sure you know causes more harm than good at times.

I ordered this along with the Audobon Field Guide and they both arrived yesterday. Within minutes of opening this book, I identified 3 of the mushrooms sitting on my kitchen counter that I'd just spent half the day trying to figure out online! Pictures are great because they're color-accurate and show the angles I need, it's organized in a way that's meaningful to me as a beginner, and the descriptions gave me long-overdue insight into concepts I've struggled with such as taxonomy, toxicity effects, and how to tell the difference between an edible delight vs. a gut-wrenching nightmare. He even includes ridiculously simple recipes. Most importantly, as a mushroom noob, his non-condescending, light-hearted humor, and intuitive writing style gave me the confidence to feel like I can actually do this.

I really have enjoyed reading this book. I'm a casual mushroom observer, and just wanted to know more about the kinds I see on my walks. This book was everything I hoped it would be, and more. I loved learning more about mushrooms in general, and I love the humor and spirit of the book. I think I will buy the author's other book "Mushrooms Demystified" as well, because I enjoy the breadth and depth of his knowledge, as well as his writing style.

Good book for highschool students

I'm taking a course on competitive problem solving at a local college for high school students. We are starting out by going through the series of geometric transformations by Yaglom. The lessons are quite easy to understand and the problems are very good. I started the books without a clue on how to start the problems and now I can solve pretty much all of them... so the book must be doing its job pretty well.

Simple, but elegant

The book uses only basic notions to show the power of simple geometric transformations. Theorems (some simple, some not so obvious) are demonstrated by means of rotation, reflexion, stretching, in a very elegant way.

Can be enjoyed from High school level up.

With Geometric Transformations I it is a masterpiece of elegance, split into two books.

Problem solving for Olympians

The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the second of three books, it deals with similarity transformations.

These are great books for problem solving.

A straightforward discussion of what to do with your money upon retirement.

The book is inexpensive, directed toward the financial layman, and an easy read. It can be finished in a single weekend.

The author first presents data to convince the reader that while he or she may presently have the skills to manage an economic retirement, these skills diminish with age. The information is persuasive and the bibliography is supportive. After the reader realizes, he or she may lose the skills to make critical decisions with resources which are not replaceable, the author poses the question of what to do. The book then systematically discusses ways of dealing with retirement needs and how they may be met.

The book makes it evident that while the appropriate saving for retirement, may have taken place, there may be no concrete plan for the distant future once the resources are in place. There may be no plan for addressing specific needs if a death or significant debilitating illness should affect either the individual or spouse or if one or both should live to 115.

While it is almost impossible to go to any financial site on the internet without getting caveats about readjusting your financial goals with aging, approaching retirement, or after retirement, few or none indicates the rationale beyond the warnings, or provides clear guidance as to how best to proceed. This book does that. It gives the reader a deeper understanding of the economics, need to prepare for change, and the vehicles for doing so.

The discussion of finance is aimed at the layman in his or her quest for security during retirement. It discusses poor financial choices or risks and how to avoid them. It presents dangers of personal money management as ones abilities lessen, and gives information for the individual who wishes to make decisions now while at the peak of his or her financial understanding. Even if one does not opt for the authors suggested pathways, this book generates a new viewpoint on personal finance and brings about an awareness of what the future may hold. It should be mandatory reading for one upon retirement.

Helpful Guide

The Anatomy of Sports Injuries is a great 'go to' reference for home use, or - in my case - a personal training studio. We train a cross section of people, from athletes to stay at home moms, business men and women to teachers, doctors, dentists and lawyers. Bottom line is most will, at some point, develop a 'sports injury' of one kind or another. This particular book doesn't go into great detail on specific injuries, but it is a wonderful, quick reference source to determine the actual injury, prognosis, and treatment plan. There are even a few specific exercises for each trauma. Additionally, the layout, by area of the body, allows one to rapidly find the specific locale and possible injury. This is almost always the first book I refer to regarding an injury, then I may or may not proceed to less user friendly books to obtain additional information. Great book. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

I thought this book will have a Anatomy of how injuries look like. There's not much of that, plus is a little hard to pinpoint the illustration with the information about that specific injury. Maybe for future reference when it comes to something like anatomy, is always best to have one injury, rehab, anatomy of the joint involved in on page per injury or anatomy part. One book you may want to look for is The Complete Guide to Sports Injuries by H. Winter Griffith. It may not have illustrations but the information on how deal with an injury is there and one injury per page for easy searching, and sorting alphabetically.
