Authentic Scottish-style ales

This is a great reference for making good ales, running the gambit of lower-gravity Scottish ales, through the grandest big-sweet ale known commonly as Strong Scotch Ale. It is really well-written, and even if I do not have a batch of Scottish ale cold-conditioning to patiently look forward to, it is enjoyable to read through, with some entertaining history interspersed. This is the best resource of its kind, and Ray Daniels says as much too, in his excellent book "Designing Great Beers."

Excellent book on this style

Scotch ale can be very different from English ale, and is typically higher gravity, lower alcohol, not as intensely hopped, has a sweeter finish, and a creamier head. There are exceptions, such as in the case of barley wine, which can be very high in alcohol and comparable to wine. Scottish beer and ale have some of the most delicate and unique flavors which don't occur in any other type of beer.

I learned many interesting facts about not just Scottish ale but other beers as well. For example, the finings that are often added to ale as a preservative are a silicate substance that traditionally comes from the swim bladder of a certain fish. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a substitute for it now, but that's where it came from originally.

There is a huge amount of other fascinating information in this very readable, well-written book about this style. The books in this series emphasize more the practical aspects of brewery operations, and this one is no different. But the author also delves into much of the history, and it was interesting to learn the differences between how brewers worked in the past compared to the modern operations, which permit much closer control of all the processes and ingredients, such as knowing more accurately the alpha acid content of the hops. But they were still able to do amazingly well with what they knew back then just from experience and good ol' Scottish cleverness and common sense. In fact, the book has two sections covering the history, one from 6500 B.C. to 1820, and the other from 1820 to 1891.

In addition to the chapters on water, hopping and bittering, malt, yeast, and so on, the book also has a section detailing typical recipes and there is an appendix discussing the most important breweries along with descriptions of their ales. Finally, there are further appendices on weights and measures and a glossary of technical terms. This is a fine book on the subject of Scottish ale that should be of interest to new and experienced afficionados alike.

Brilliant Read - Even If You're Not a Fan of Scot Ales

I've read 12 of the 17 Classic Beer Style books so far and in my opinion this one is hands down the best. The great late Greg Noonan does an excellent job covering a beer style that truth be told isn't incredibly popular or complex. He spends the perfect amount of time discussing history of the style (unlike some of the books in the series that go on with this ad nauseum) leaving enough pages to adequately cover malt, water, hops, and the brewing process without ever being too short or too technical. I read this book from front to back - something I've never done with any of the other Classic Style books - and this wasn't even the shortest one! Scottish/Scotch Ales are one of my least favorite styles to drink and brew of the 17 styles in the series, but this is by far my favorite one of the books. I'm confident that if you read this book and listen to Greg's brilliant advice, you'll make a stellar Scot(ch) ale.

Iran, Islam, and Southern Baptists have provided me landscapes and experiences to ponder the lives of Christians and Muslims and other religious and secular persons of particular faith communities. Especially I have lived up close to ayatollahs in Shiah Islam, visited multiple Muslim preachers in their mosques and hosted them and their followers in our home. My Ph.D. dissertation was "Religion and Politics in Iranian Shiah Islam". Also I have been immersed in Baptist and Christian life since a young man and have been a minister, missionary, professor and anthropologist involved in the lives of diverse peoples. This writing is filled with journeys associated with tradition and change colored by two major revolutions. The first is Iran with the downfall of the Shah and the rise of the rule of Shiah Islam under the brand of the ayatollahs. The second is the 'take over' by 'ultra conservatives' from the 'moderates' of the Southern Baptist Convention. I taught Muslim preachers and Baptist preachers during these times. I also was associated with the administrators and faculties of the Islamic and Baptist institutions. This is my story of experiences and observations behind the scenes and upon the public stage. George W. Braswell, Jr. D.D., DMin., Ph.D. has degrees from Wake Forest University, Yale University Divinity School, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His doctorates are in Theology and Anthropology. He and his wife, Joan, were the first appointed missionaries of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board to Iran in 1967. As the only Christian he served on the Faculty of Islamic Theology of the University of Teheran teaching comparative religions. He retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Missions and World Religions from Southeastern Seminary in 2004 after 31 years and now serves as Senior Professor of World Religions and Founding Director of the World Religions and Global Cultures Center of Campbell University Divinity School. Among his eight books on world religions and Iran is Islam: Its Prophet, Peoples, Politics and Power. Professor Braswell lives with his wife, Joan, in Wake Forest, NC. They have four children and three grandchildren.

About the Author
Dan Abnett lives and works in Maidstone, Kent, in England. Well known for his comic work, he has written everything from the Mr Men to the X-Men in the last decade, and received particular acclaim for his five year run on The Legion for DC Comics. He is currently writing Majestic for Wildstorm, and Sinister Dexter and The VCs for 2000 AD. A story well-told, a component to a masterpiece ...

Before I begin, I want to explain that 4 stars out of 5 is the highest rating I am willing to give. For me to give a 5 out of 5 rating for any book, it needs to be singularly profound in the effect it has on me. Since this novel is part of a series (as yet incomplete), I am not prepared to give it such recognition. However, I wholeheartedly endorse Dan Abnett as one of the best, if not THE BEST writer for Games Workshop and the Black Library.
"Ghostmaker" is the second installment of the Gaunt's Ghost series and to me, it seems like the single most important book in the series in terms of introducing us to certain signature characters. There are flashbacks to key events between Gaunt and each of these characters. It helps cement their place within the regiment and their unique relationship with the Colonel-Commissar. The main story taking place in the book is also noteworthy. You will be given a glimpse into the Inquisition and inquisitor Lilith, as well as, a first person perspective of one of WH40K's popular Xenos races, the Craftworld Eldar. The descriptions of war, internecine feuds, and general grist and gristle of a universe driven by incessant conflict will provide intriguing and engaging reading for everyone who appreciates such literary fare. If this is the first book you read from the series, I am sure you will end up ordering or otherwise trying to lay your hands on other books from the series as soon as you finish reading the final sentence on the final page of this one. It is that good. And who ever said more of a good thing was bad, eh?

The book arrived in time, and did not have any signs of wear and tear. As earlier reviews have indicated, this is a series of short stories revolving around the exploits of the Tanith First And Only during its early days (before the events in the book NECROPOLIS).

More a Story Collection Than A Novel

Unlike most sequels, this book easily stands alone. Portions predate the first novel and the characters are well fleshed out, without relying on information from the previous book.
It is essentially a collection of short stories, linked together as flashbacks from a current situation. One story for each for the main players of the "inner circle" of Ghosts, and then a "finale" that finishes up the situation from which the flashbacks take place.
The format is both a strength and a weakness. It makes it possible to read a "chunk" at a time and put it down while reading something else without getting lost, and as observed above, reading the previous work is not necessary to the understanding of this one. However, some of the same expositionary material is repeated (thankfully not verbatim) in several stories. (My personal opinion is that they were written seperately before being linked together.)
Having a working knowledge of the Warhammer 40,000 universe will greatly add to the enjoyment of this novel, but is not absolutely necessary.
The quality of writing would have earned a "4" had it not been for the repetitive exposition. All-in-all a solidly entertaining bit of fluff.

Comprehensive Contemporary Theology

Ricoeur's work in the areas of hermeneutics and theology has been invaluable, and the essays contained in this book are particularly poignant and accessible. His work on Memory and Suffering alone make the book an excellent purchase, and every essay attests to the irreducible nature of God, Scripture, and Theology in a way few authors have done. An excellent work.

Narratival Hermeneutics

I am not going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of Figuring the Sacred. Not every chapter was equally good. Some of his musings on Heidegger and Kant were interesting but not germane to narrative theology.

"Philosophy and Religious Language"

"Understanding a text is always something more than the summation of partial meanings; the text as a whole has to be considered as a hierarchy of topics" (Ricoeur 38). This makes me think of chiasms. The structure of a chiasm reinforces meaning. Meaning unfolds from narrative.

"Not just any theology whatsoever can be tied to narrative form, but only a theology that proclaims Yahweh to be the grand actor of a history of deliverance. Without a doubt it is this point that forms the greatest contrast between the God of Israel and the God of Greek Philosophy" (40).

Manifestation and Proclamation

This is the most important essay in the book and the one that causes much offense. Ricoeur opposes a philosophy of manifestation (ontotheology) with a philosophy of proclamation (Yahweh speaks).

Manifestation

The "numinous" element of the sacred has nothing to do with language (49). Another key element is theophany--not moments in the biblical narrative, but anything by which the sacred shows itself (icons, relics, holy places). This means that reality is something other than itself while remaining itself.

There is a correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm (54). This brings to mind the Luciferian "as above, so below" dictum.

Proclamation

There is a rupture--violent in the case of the prophets' war against Baalism--between manifestation and proclamation. The word outweighs the numinous (56). Israel's whole theology--and identity--was formed around discourses.

Per idols and icons: "We may say that within the Hebraic domain they (hierophanies) withdraw to the extent that instruction through Torah overcomes any manifestation through an image. A Theology of the Name is opposed to any hierophany of an idol...Hearing the word has taken the place of vision of signs" (56). God's pesel is the Ten Words. It is the only pesel he commanded.

Communal Readings

In "The 'Sacred' Text and the Community" Ricoeur gives a neat deconstruction of the concept "sacred," especially when applied with a book.

For us, manifestation is not be necessity linked to language. The word 'sacred' belongs to the side of manifestation, not to the side of proclamation, because many things may be sacred without being a text (71)

Ricoeur the Hermeneut

His reading of Genesis 1:1-2:4a is interesting, but more for the method than the conclusions. His essay on the Imagination is quite valuable in showing what "goes on" in a narrative. Many narratives in the Bible, particularly Jesus's parables, employ intertextuality which always forces an expansion of meaning from the text. In other words, it is "an object with surplus value" (152). Assuming that the Holy Spirit didn't write chaotically and randomly, isolated texts are now seen in a pattern and signify something else, something more (161).

Ricoeur then moves to a section on biblical time, which is useful for meditation. He summarizes von Rad, Cullman, and others. I won't belabor the point.

His essay "Interpretive Narrative" offers his famous distinction between "idem" identity (the god of sameness, the god of Greek metaphysics) and ipse identity (the God who is constant to the Covenant). He expands this motif in "Naming God." God's identity is seen in his historic acts.

Conclusion

While magnificent, it is in many ways a difficult read. He assumes a familiarity with Continental Philosophy (itself a daunting task) and even then some essays don't seem to have a point. But when he unloads on narrative he truly delivers.

A philosophical reflection on religious understanding

This book is not an easy read. I found it tough sledding in some places. But it's well worth the effort for those who are willing to stick with it. Written by one of the leading philosophers of the 20th century, it uses both analytic and continental philosophy to plumb the depths of religious thought in an attempt to cast light on the connections between religious texts (the word) and spiritual experience (the sacred). At his best, Ricoeur is brilliant in ways that invite us to go deeper into our traditions and to connect our traditions with our personal experience.
