For such a short book, there's a lot here.

This is one of those books that I really enjoyed, but I'm not sure I could tell you why. The structure defies logic and reason, yet it's critical to the narrative. The story primarily follows Billy Pilgrim, who is an interesting character though I never (not once) identified with him as a person. He's the ultimate observer -- coldly watching everything happening around him and commenting on it. Fortunately, for the reader, he witnesses some very interesting and horrifying events.

The presentation challenges the reader to come to some of their own conclusions about war and human nature. This is helped along by how cold the protagonist is because he doesn't seem to have an opinion of his own.

I self-identify as a Christian and, as such, I know Mr. Vonnegut and I do not agree on matters of faith. Even so, I found the subtle commentary on scripture throughout interesting. It didn't seem like I was being chastised for my beliefs, but there were small challenges that I can sift through and consider -- which I always appreciate.

If you're looking for a book that is going to mess with your head and leave you delightfully puzzled, this one is a good fit.

Fiction is the healer and fact an insurmountable torturous device of memory in domesticated paradise, just ask Valencia as she herself dies in an amusing paradoxical twist called fate whilst driving to Billy's head split bedside. Billy is always alone, never written lonely, so it goes...

I was a bit unsure at first about the way this novel was written: change in narration and story. I was confused about what this book was really about when it was still being introduced. When the story finally began I quickly let go of any doubt and began to understand it better. A simply yet beautifully written novel that made me late wherever I went because I was so engrossed in it and didn't want to put it down. More than everything I really loved the going back and forth in time. Left me wondering about certain events before my questions were answered but the new change in topic only gave me another set of impatient questions. So it goes.

Best series ever!

I really enjoyed all of the books.They each are very emotioal in different ways.The only this I did not like was that there were numerous grammar and spelling mistakes.I would definetly recomend all of these books to anyone OVER 13 though.

I have not read all of them yet. They are really amazing books so far. However when my child asked me months ago to get the beginning of the books for her and reading the descriptions I thought okay not bad. I decided to read it just a few days ago. Felt how I let my child age 10 read this I must be a stupid parent. Although this topic is not secret in my house. More details would be great for parent that the book contains language and is in sexual nature. Book 3 gave me detail and told her no. Rating the book is 5 description is 1

Silence was an amazing book but the editors need to shake their heads. So many spelling and grammer issues in the first book. If it wasn't for the spelling and grammer i would havd given the book a 5 star rating! Loved the first book so much im just about the buy the second book! I cried a few times in this book and couldn't put it down!!

About the Author
G. Tyler Miller has written 62 textbooks for introductory courses in environmental science, basic ecology, energy, and environmental chemistry. Since 1975, Miller's books have been the most widely used textbooks for environmental science in the United States and throughout the world. They have been used by almost three million students and have been translated into eight languages. Miller has a professional background in chemistry, physics, and ecology. He has a PhD from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctoral degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation's first environmental studies programs, and developed an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time in 1975. Currently, he is the president of Earth Education and Research, which is devoted to improving environmental education.

Scott Spoolman is a writer and textbook editor with more than 30 years of experience in educational publishing. He has worked with Tyler Miller since 2003 as a contributing author on editions of LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, and SUSTAINING THE EARTH. With Norman Myers, he also coauthored ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS: A MODULAR APPROACH. Spoolman holds a master's degree in science journalism from the University of Minnesota. Sustaining the Earth

1. I bought the book used for college course at a great $40 price with some cosmetic wear and tear and who cares - it was not bought as an art investment, just a text book.
2. Definitely a worthwhile book to read, however (and here comes the rub) authors Miller and Spoolman (I suspect Miller is the heavy weight of the two) occassionally depart from dispassionate science. They aer not impartial and have some very big axes to grind. Also, the writing style needs reflects their missionary zeal. It is not tight, concise, and antiseptic. Implicitly they are looking for converts.
3. An example (the cheap shot): they are happy to apply models of species origination, growth, evolution, decline, and ultimate extinction to the animal and plant kindom as a whole, BUT, they are squeamish in applying these frameworks DISPASSIONATELY to homo sapien. Good science is dispassionate and Miller and Spoolman are anything but.
