Excellent freebie and start to a series - Not a cliffie

This is my first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. I picked it up as a freebie and it was well worth the chance. The book starts of in a really suspenseful way, with the h coming home after a traumatic accident. She's lost her memory and her brother and physician decide that in order to recover her memory properly, they must keep her in the dark about everything. She returns to her home but there are no clues there - no photos, no records of friends or even a lover. The h and her brother are twins but she's angry with him because she remembers that he's a recovering addict and she doesn't trust him. She's not happy that he won't tell her anything. She knows she was a musician but that because of the injuries suffered to her hand she'll never play in the symphony again. She appears to be having hallucinations where a man called Adam appears to her and she is incredibly drawn to him. Some time later another man Paxton comes to see her and he reminds her of Adam. I have to say that the book is impossible to put down because you just have to find out what's going on. The background theme of music was absolutely lovely.

What kept the book from being 5 stars? I'm not mad about the triangle between the h and the brothers. She got involved with the second brother during a 3 month break with the H some time back. It was tacky and I found it detracted a bit (but not a lot) from the story.

A soulful experience!!!!

I am not new to Kelli McCracken's ability to create art with words...as having read the Soulmate series books, but I must say she blew me away with this book! Her characters are so real and simply become a part of your life from page one until the end...and linger after that. Jo's road to recovery from an accident that not only stole her memories, but other precious things from her life, is a journey of mystery and realities, love and pain....heart and soul. I eagerly await the next installment of this series and any others Kelli McCracken has brewing in that brilliant mind of hers. 5 BIG STARS!!!

Incredibly Journey of Love, Heartbreak & Discovery

All I can say is Kelli McCracken blew my mind but in a good way. WOW! So AMAZING!

In Heartstrings we meet Jo, who has suffered a traumatic accident and she can't remember anything. All she knows is her reason for being is gone, how can she create music again when she can't play the piano ever again.

She knows everyone around her is keeping things from her and everytime she tries to remember it just hurts her more. Then enter this mysterious person named Adam. Why does he disappear all the time, is he real? Is he a figment of her warped mind and sense of reality?

Jo feels like she is losing what little control she has until Paxton shows up on her doorstep. He looks so much like Adam but who is he really and what is he to her. She feels so connected to him and shares her fears, but who is Paxton really and who is Adam?

In this book Kelli takes us on emotional self discovery as we travel the path right next to Jo. We experience her pain and the frustration of not knowing who she is or who she was for the past few years. The way this story weaves around you and becomes one in your heart is amazing. This book had me feeling so much emotion and at one point I couldn't see the words through my tears.

I am in awe and wonder of Kelli's Storytelling Talent. I fell in love with her books with the Soulmate Series, the love affair continued in the Mystique Antiques Series and now with the Heart & Soul Series; I see myself becoming more and more of a super fan of Kelli McCracken's. I wish I could give this book a MILLION STARS!!! Unfortunately I am limited to five.

Be prepared Kelli because I plan on stalking you for a very long time!!!

Every "book" is the same! Heroines go out to fight the bad guys, get distracted, get captured, go on to become strippers, prostitutes, sperm covered sluts, and slaves to sexual deviants that seem to populate Mr. Ship's world!

Fortunately all of these deviants live in the same neighborhood, for the most part!

I've come to the conclusion that Mr. Ship, either hates strong women or he's really into BDSM and humiliation!

All of his "books" are predictable and the only difference is the cast of criminals that end up on the pages!

Reading it as part of our daily devotions

My wife and I have spent decades daily reading aloud through the Bible together. Sometimes we consulted commentaries when we wanted to know more about a passage. We never thought about reading an in-depth work until I tried Chafer's Systematic Theology. We had no idea how extensive it was because we have a digital version, and that saves a chunk of shelf space since Chafer's is an 8-volume work.

We just completed the foward after several weeks of reading, which gave an overview of the set. Chafer warns that most systematic theologies ignore or omit major topics. These truncated versions leave the theology student less aware of important topics so that when he steps into the pulpit he is ill-equipped to properly minister to his flock.

Why would a retired couple from medical professions want to read a systematic theology? After all, a diligent study of the Bible is sufficient because the Word of God is living and active. However, it takes a great deal of effort to pull together all the great biblical themes. We can competently explain that salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is the most important doctrine in the Bible. It is clearly taught in both the Old and New Testaments. In his forward, Chafter promises to take all those loose ends and bring them together in a systematic way so we can understand how all the Bible's themes fit together. We are now enthusiastically ready to begin the long journey through this work.

As an example of how a systematic theology would be helpful, a Christian Bible teacher, and our friend, claims that nowhere in the Old Testament is there any indication of humans promised eternal life by faith, and no indication of a physical resurrection, but he is greatly mistaken. He considers Enoch's rapture and Elijah's ascension to be special cases. What? Only two men have been taken into God's eternal domain? The appearance of Moses and Elijah on the mountain at Yeshua's (Jesus') transfiguration, shows them both to be alive, even though Moses had died on Mount Nebo looking into the promised land. And Jesus explained to the Sadducees who didn't believe in the resurrection (while the Pharisees did), that God was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that God is the God of the living and not the dead.

Chafer promises he is going to thoroughly cover the topics most systematic theologies either treat lightly or omit completely.

Uneven

Parts of this casebook are interesting but the Author has a tendency to repeat his title so frequently that I wonder if he is too preoccupied with self-promotion. Some chapters are dull. I guess it depends on how much exposure a reader has had to the facts of forensic psychology as far as they are currently understood. If you havn't had much exposure you may find this book interesting. I found it disappointing.

The artist Paul Gauguin once said that "life being what it is, one dreams of revenge." In "Bad Men Do What Good Men Dream," Dr. Robert Simon explains that all people have "bad dreams"--thoughts of suicide, or revenge, or crime--but only a very few cross the line from bad dream to bad action.
This book explores the nebulous borderline between what people think and what they do. The topics covered include serial killing, workplace violence, multiple personality disorder, killer cults, suicide, sexual misconduct by professional caregivers, rape, stalking and pyschopathic behavior.
In each area, Dr. Simon's analysis shows just how complex and surprising the human mind can be. Even apparently straightforward questions, such as whether a given criminal is likely to be dangerous in the future, or whether a "suicide" is actually an accident, turn out to be very hard to answer.
At times, Dr. Simon's style is a bit academic, but on the whole he writes clearly and does a good job of covering a wide range of complex issues.

This book takes as its chronological focus the Greco-Persian world of the second and first millennia BC. This time period was selected for examination as it was during these two millennia that the vital role which the horse was to play in human history became fully apparent. The second millennium BC saw the development of the vast chariot forces which were to form an important part of the armed forces of numerous lands, from Mycenaean Greece in the West to India and China in the far East, while the following millennium saw the gradual replacement of chariots with cavalry forces, which continued to play a vital role in military warfare right up until the beginnings of the twentieth century AD. Part One traces the history of the horse from its evolution to the development and spread of chariot and cavalry forces. Parts Two and Three examine the famous horse-breeding regions of the ancient world and, through an analysis of archaeological, iconographical, and literary evidence, attempts to determine why these regions were famed for horse breeding and what were the physical characteristics and given attributes of the various breeds.

About the Author
Thomas Donaghy was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Greek and Roman Civilization and Ancient Greek from University College Dublin in 2002. He went on to work in the Irish horse breeding industry, completing the Irish National Stud's Thoroughbred Breeding and Management Course in 2004. He was awarded a PhD from University College Dublin in 2009 for his thesis "Horse Breeds and Breeding in the Greco-Persian World". Two articles were published from this in the Journal of Veterinary History: "The Origins of Equine Medicine" (2010) and "Feeding the Ancient Horse" (2002).

Pamela Meyer, Ph.D. is the President of Meyer Creativity Associates where she works with organizations internationally who want to be more innovative and agile. Meyer is the author of three books on innovation, learning and change, including "From Workspace to Playspace: Innovating, Learning and Changing Through Dynamic Engagement" (Jossey-Bass, 2010). In addition to her speaking and consulting practice, Pamela teaches courses in business creativity, organizational change, and adult learning at DePaul University, School for New Learning in Chicago, where she is also the Director of the Center to Advance Education for Adults.

Well-researched. Practical. Essential.

I've been a fan of Pamela Meyer's well-written and well-cited business writing since her book, From Workplace to Playspace: Innovating, Learning and Changing Through Dynamic Engagement. In Agility Shift, Meyer focuses on enabling a more nimble workplace culture, one that can handle the constant volatility and disruption of business today. Talent Development professionals familiar with Agile methodology, will find this book nothing short of a watershed. However, the thinking presented in this book would be of value to any leader/manager looking to make their own team, department, or organization more competitive in a world of constant, often unpredictable change.

After a quick read, I found her mix of concepts and practical tools a win. Meyer's ease of navigating between intriguinig case studies and straightforward advice makes reading it feel more like lucking into a lunch with a world class consultant, rather than reading a business book. She's sharing a career of knowledge at a fire sale price. For example, if you like tools, look at her checklist on p.134-135. She provides an easy road map to apply so many of the Learning & Development concepts she introduces. Likewise, her sample question list "Recruiting for Agility" on p. 158-159 is an HR Manager's dream, thoughtfully condensing the book's talent acquisition information into simple tactics to determine if potential hires are already aligned to these new needs of business. (Hint: not all Milennials are ready for the Agility Shift. This book will pay dividends no matter which generations are in your workforce.)

After a quick read, I'm using her book to help me assess how to improve the responsiveness of my own organization. I'm currently using her work on "Ecosystem mapping" (p.114) to help me understand which stakeholders can help build a more nimble organization, and who will need more support.

Obviously, I can't say enough good things about Meyer's experience and scholarship on these matters. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent!

It’s refreshing to find someone with something new to say about business culture that you can immediately appreciate as both insightful and useful. Pamela Meyer’s latest book is filled with smart observations of real situations that are recognizable by people in both large and small companies, and her analyses ring true for both circumstances. The examples are roomy enough that you can visualize your particular situation comfortably within their confines and her ideas provide structure without being excessively limiting. I especially like her understanding of the limited value of excessive information and the notion of implementing a culture that can effectively maneuver in the absence of “all the facts.” Even working in a highly innovative company which promotes a culture of flexibility and exceptional creativity, I find things in The Agility Shift that can teach and inspire. I recommend it to others who are interested in developing a centered mindset that responds to unforeseen change with effective action.

Well-rounded and well-researched guide to adopting an agile mindset

As a software development manager, agile development and methodologies have become extremely important. Following a project plan, which was devised months ago without any flexibility in the process just doesn’t work anymore: new requirements become apparent, stakeholder’s priorities change, delays require a quick shift in another direction.

“Being agile” is more than just a buzzword that somebody can adopt in their vocabulary – it is a completely different way of working and approaching challenges. To understand and appreciate what it means to live and breathe the agile spirit, I needed a good guide.

When I got my hands on “The Agility Shift”, I was very excited, because Pamela Meyer has a track record of not only running a successful consulting business, but also doing a great job between bridging well-grounded research with maintaining an appealing and entertaining writing style.

Meyer introduces the topic with practical examples and gives the reader some background on the core concepts. She introduces several studies and medical research to build the case for shifting toward an agile mindset and guides the reader towards ideas how to implement an agile organizational style. Meyer illustrates those steps by using practical examples from her professional experience and principles like the Relational Web. Her easy-to-follow narrative helps the reader not only to understand but also gives great advice on how to holistically embrace and explore the concept of “being agile”.

I can highly recommend this book not only for decision makers who want to take their team or company to the next level, but for anyone who is curious about the background and interested in making the shift towards an agile mindset.
