This book is about these amazing men, the magic mountain on which they train, and the philosophy of Tendai Buddhism, which inspires them in their quest for the supreme. The reader will learn about the monks' death-defying fasts, their vegetarian training diet, their handmade straw running shoes, and feats of endurance such as their ceremonial leap into a waterfall. Illustrated with superb photographs, the book also contains the first full-length study in English of Mount Hiei and Tendai Buddhism.

John Stevens lived in Japan for thirty-five years, where he was a professor of Buddhist studies at Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai. Stevens is a widely respected translator, an ordained Buddhist priest, a curator of several major exhibitions of Zen art, and an aikido instructor. He has authored more than thirty books and is one of the foremost Western experts on aikido, holding a ranking of 7th dan Aikikai. Stevens has also studied calligraphy for decades, authoring the classic Sacred Calligraphy of the East. If you are ever dragging to get out for your morning run...the marathon monks will guilt you into calling in sick so you can run all day. This is absolutely one of the single most amazing books I've ever read, and even if it were fiction, it would be incredible.

No word can ever describe the emotions you will live in the reading of this book. It is sad that no one cared to mention that John Stevens,(the author) is himself a Marathon Monk. (I finished translating this book into French, in 1991)

These monks are so inspirational any person facing hardship should read this book to give some perspective to life.
After running for 2 years you finally get to wear your rain hat-- if a monk fails to finish his run-- he is supposed to kill himself.
no nike cross-trainers.. they run in straw sandals--

Desde hace algunas d�cadas la �tica se ha convertido en una disciplina m�s dentro del �rea de estudios b�blicos. De hecho, es una materia m�s de estudio en seminarios y universidades cristianas en todo el mundo. Ello ha conllevado la necesidad de producir m�s literatura cristiana sobre el tema de la �tica b�blica. No son pocos los libros que disponemos en espa�ol acerca de esta materia. Bases B�blicas de la �tica, por James E. Giles (Mundo Hispano) es uno de ellos.

Este volumen provee puntos muy desarrollados y que pueden aportar grandes cosas a los lectores. Giles comienza aportando definiciones pertinentes para el estudio y compresi�n de la �tica. T�rminos como teleolog�a, la �tica deontol�gica, el epicure�smo, y otros m�s son definidos por el autor en una manera entendible y accesible. El cap�tulo 1 est� dedicado precisamente a la provisi�n de dichos t�rminos y sus significados.

El autor contin�a con una introducci�n a los sistemas �ticos hist�ricos y contempor�neos. En el cap�tulo 2 el autor divide los sistemas �ticos en dos grupos: sistemas teleol�gicos y �tica deontol�gica. La aportaci�n de este cap�tulo es la base para la compresi�n de la integraci�n de la �tica y la Biblia.

Las secciones fuertes de este libro son los cap�tulos dedicados a la �tica de los libros del Antiguo Testamento y el Nuevo Testamento. Si bien el autor no hace un estudio exhaustivo de la �tica en cada libro, s� abarca cada divisi�n literaria de la Biblia en relaci�n con la �tica.
Los �ltimos cap�tulos del libro son un estudio sobre asuntos como la pena de muerte, el aborto, el divorcio, o la familia desde el punto de vista social y b�blico. Giles hace un trabajo magn�fico en cuanto al desarrollo de la idea da trascendencia de la Biblia en la sociedad moderna. El prop�sito principal es mostrar al lector qu� tiene Dios que decir a cerca de los temas sociales m�s controversiales de nuestros d�as, y el autor cumple ese objetivo a la perfecci�n.

Este libro es una buena herramienta para aquellos que est�n interesados en iniciarse en el estudio de la �tica b�blica. Debo mencionar que no es, a d�a de hoy, el mejor libro de �tica cristiana que puedan adquirir, o al menos, el m�s actualizado. Ello se debe a que los datos aportados por Giles corresponden a la d�cada de los noventa y no han sido actualizados a datos m�s contempor�neos y ajustados a nuestros d�as. Otro punto d�bil de este libro son las repetidas interpretaciones personales del autor sobre pasajes espec�ficos y en las cuales s�lo provee su punto de vista interpretativo, y no otros alternativos y v�lidos tambi�n. Esto puede influenciar al lector a adquirir el punto de vista que el autor presenta.

En resumen, recomiendo este libro para aquellas personas que quieran iniciarse en el estudio de la �tica b�blica, pero teniendo en cuenta los datos obsoletos que este libro contiene. Esperamos que un d�a no muy lejano podamos ver este libro actualizado para beneficio del pueblo de Dios.

A great guide for SPSS --from a teacher of Research Methods.

I teach Research Methods and have found "SPSS Demystified" to be a great step by step guide to learn SPSS. I have used this manual successfully for several semesters now. Part of the success has come from the fact that many of my students keep the manual after having gone through the course. They like this guide.
This guide is clear and succinct, with no guess work when running the analysis from a student's point of view.

Sorry, but this is a pretty good book. You need to have SPSS program bundled with the text or have access to it another way (e.g., through a university's computer system). Other than that it does a good job of explaining many common statistical routines for behavioral (or other) sciences.

This book is short, sweet, and to the point. I fully recommend it. Without it, I don't know how I would have passed my stats class. If you don't buy it; atleast check it out at the library it's totally worth it.
