About the Author
Dr. Haider Warraich graduated from medical school in Pakistan in 2009. He did his residency in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, one of the main teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. He is currently a fellow in cardiology at Duke University Medical Center. His medical and Op Ed pieces have appeared in many media outlets including the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal,Slate, and the LA Times among others.

A comprehensive treatise on an important and timely subject.

This is an incredibly well-researched, well-written, and eminently readable book about the difficult topics of death, medicine, and how medicine has changed death and dying. I found Dr. Warraich's explanation of cellular death very interesting, along with information about how humanity has handled death throughout history, up to the present day. He talks extensively about the dilemmas surrounding extending the lives of patients when there is any doubt about the wishes of the patient or in cases in which the patient is terminally ill and prolonging life may not be in the patient's best interest. Since most of us have known people who have died after prolonged illnesses, will come to know people who will go through this, or may even endure this ourselves, there is a great deal of relevant information in this book. The book also makes a good argument for putting our own wishes in writing so that the decisions about the kind of death we would wish for ourselves is in our control rather than under the control of medical staff who do not know us at all except as a patient in the hospital. I recommend this book to everyone.
