Disorganized, messy and helpful

Having worked my way up to a level of expertise in computational mathematics where only obscure journal articles and academic compendiums can add anything to my knowledge, I find myself rarely being challenged. This book presented one, though not in the way I would hope.
A certain level of forgiveness for not having English as ones mother tongue should be granted for international works such as this, but this is beyond condoning. The unnecessary spelling and grammatical errors are punctuated only with incorrectly labeled graphs and incomplete and embarrassingly mistyped equations. The organization of knowledge presentation is abysmal, as entire concepts are referenced before later being introduced. But however frustrating the text itself may be, for a review of the application of this arcane topic, there is none better. The first seven chapters regarding the foundations of wavelets and neural networks are worthless; the last three justify the book's existence. The useful chapters cover important areas of use for wavenets, describing applicability and limitations, and even venture into cost calculations though stochastic learning (a rare gem indeed). Missing are critical references to base function selection, online updating, or optimization.
Overall, this book is not for the inexperienced. Ignore the first half of the book entirely, and read the latter selectively, if forgivingly.

Save yourself time and money and don't buy this book! This is an extremely boring book and I don't suggest it. Big waste of money! It is just common sense about wavelet and neural networks nothing new.

A must read book if you are an optometrist

If you are practicing optometry in the United States, you should definitely read this book. If you are, you're more likely practicing some level of negligence without knowing it. This book will help remind you of it.
The book is quite easy to read. I'm impressed that a JD can write a book in such a simple language, which is what I like most about it. First part of the book covers optometry law of the US. Then, it goes into the laws of each state from A to Z. I keep it in my office for good reference.

I also like that the book gives you different forms: informed consent forms, refusal forms, referral forms, surgical forms, other forms that you can copy and use for your office. Even these forms are written in a simple and concise language. Patients will feel more friendly reading and signing the forms.
The only little thing I'd wish was that the "Summary of Optometry Laws by State" section was not written in all CAP's. But that's just minor thing, and it's my personal preference.
Overall, I'd give this book an A+. It deserves to be read by all practicing optometrists. If you're an optometry student about to go into clinical, I would highly recommend this book as well.

I find Optometry Law extremely well written and easier to comprehend than your typical law book. It breaks down each section of the law with respect to Optometry into simple, concise descriptions. I especially like the sample cases and take home message after each section that makes the specific law Dr. Eap is explaining more applicable and easier to understand. The break down of the Clinical Optometry portion of this book is clearly organized into what is expected of the practitioner as standard of care as well as what can potentially result in legal action if the standard of care is breached. The sample forms that are included (for informed consent, dilation, release of patient information, just to name a few) make it easy to incorporate into any optometric practice. For all practicing OD's, this is an excellent reference book and will enable all clinicians to be more thorough and detail oriented.

These important topics are described in a clear and concise manner. Dr. Eap then focuses on several clinical entities including contact lenses, binocular vision, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and dissects each with reference to the law. The final chapters deal with risk management and legal tips for the practitioner. In this age of consumerism and expanded scope of practice, the book serves as an important reference for the legal and ethical implications of providing quality eye and vision health care.

8 year old son loves it! Crude humor and a story that's right up his alley

I was buyingDog Man Unleashed (Dog Man #2): From the Creator of Captain Underpants for my 8 year old son when this popped up as a suggestion. Since it was the right price, I bought it on a whim hoping he would like it. Boy am I glad I did; he LOVES this book! Whenever I hear spontaneous laughter coming from his room, sure enough, he's reading this book.

The words and vocabulary are easy to read and he loves the premise of these "bad guys" trying to be good. And of course a little bit of crude (e.g passing gas) humor also added to the merriment.

I will definitely be buying more of these. True, it's not fine literature, but he's enjoying reading and that to me is what matters.

Best book series in a while...

8 year old is a huge fan of captain underpants, as many are. He loves this one and I actually love it too. I read it after I heard him laughing so hard while doing his afterschool reading homework. Cute series, funny, entertaining and unique. I wish they would have released all at the same time so that my son can stop asking me when the next one comes out lol.

Love him or Hate Him... Be Prepared.

Joao Magueijo is the type of author you'll either love or hate. Basically as a reader you need to know what you're getting yourself into. Joao will curse, go into vivid detail about something grotesque, and quiet simply be as crude as possible at times. Thus this book is surely for adult readers. Having read both of Joao Magueijo's books, I can't honestly say he is a particularly good writer, and as hinted at above, the crudeness can be a put off. But nevertheless, I couldn't put either of his books down once I started reading them. It's perhaps because Joao will say the things others dare not say.

Overall in A Brilliant Darkness, Joao Magueijo takes you on a journey retracing the steps of Ettore Majorana, from his birth place to his last known whereabouts. At the same time, he introduces Ettore's ideas and theories, which mostly deal with neutrinos, and can get a bit technical, but for the most part won't be a problem for the avid popular science reader. What makes the book interesting is that the author shows the interrelation between the ideas Ettore was working on, Ettore's psyche and of those around him, and that of the world events taking place. Exactly how a biography should be written, as all these factors went into creating the mysterious person Ettore Majorana. The book also had a particularly strong ending, which I won't ruin for the reader. Again, overall, I can't say the book was overly well written or the best biography I've ever read, but as an avid popular science reader, I also couldn't put it down either & would gladly buy another one of his books.

The lives of nuclear physicists aren't the stuff of casual entertainment to most readers. All the more credit to Joao Magueijo for having written a highly entertaining biography that reads more like a novel thanks to his engaging wit. Left wanting more, I sought out The Strangest Man which by contrast is the sort of sober, exhaustive biography one might expect regarding a figure like Paul Dirac about whom so much more is documented than Ettore Majorana whose youthful disappearance left far less to go on and by turn far more to Magueijo's imagination. That the authors of both are themselves nuclear physicists with a talent for demystifying their subjects' technicality lends an air of authority to their attempts to explain what most of us can barely begin to grasp. Nevertheless, I would be challenged to relate much more than the nothing I knew about nuclear physics before I picked up these two books and maybe that's just as well as it maintains my fascination about these two barely fathomable characters and the genius they had in common. Had I read The Strangest Man first I'm not convinced that I would have gravitated to A Brilliant Darkness so my recommendation would be to begin with the latter. Regardless your interest in the subject I think you'll enjoy the author's sense of humor and editorial skill in keeping his narrative fresh and fast paced.

A good read

A good read; however, most of the information about Ettore Majorana was gossip and conjecture. Throwing out hypothesis about what happened to Ettore in 1938 is conjecture and moot. He disappeared and we'll never know why. And is it important anyway? Character sketches about his comtempory scientists were interesting. The book also had a lot of science which was reasonable written for a layman like me.

Beautiful Start

This book is a beautiful start to the series that introduces you to a lot of memorable moments that I felt was enjoyable. It was a shame this series did not last longer but from what you can read it is truly a stunning journey.

Story Stops Half Way Through to Make You Buy the Next One, If You Want to Find Out How it Ends

Let me firstly say I'm a huge fan of Avril Lavigne, I've got all her albums, she's one of the few modern era young musicians who actually writes her own songs and lyrics. It is obvious though, that the editor, book publishers or whoever should have insisted she play a bit heavier part in writing this thing, as it is simply a pretty mediocre storyline. On the first page, we get a message from Avril where she tells us she is excited at the opportunity to create a graphic novel. However what part she actually played is a bit ambiguous as the concept on the next page is claimed by someone called Camilla d-Errico. Camilla also claims to have done the art and written the thing with someone else called Joshua Dysart. So did Avril sit around a boardroom table with these guys and give suggestions for the plot, who knows. One's things for sure, that amazing lyric writing talent should have been used instead of the drivel d-Errico and Dysart came up with. Saying what they wrote is pretty average is being very kind. There's hardly any substance to the plot of an unpopular loner girl, who talks to her imaginary hero and friend (Avril Lavigne). Hana stumbles upon a website called Makes Wishes and it's not really explained what she does or why but a box arrives with a very poorly drawn multiple horned red demon inside who encourages her rebellious streak such as urinating in the street. Oh and if she snaps of each of its five horns she gets a wish for each. Avril warns her time and again to not use the demon but Hana wants a better life.

The pictures are pretty average as well. Most of the characters look the same, even one of the girls who was making fun of Hana looked exactly like her but taller. The Avril Lavigne imaginary friend looks nothing like Avril, although they do seem to be able to draw Avril as she looks more realistic in the posters on walls.

Plus we have the ultimate con, the graphic novel doesn't actually end. It just cuts out as if a whole story was written and ripped in two. So therefore if one of your five wishes was to know if two of Hana's four wishes made so far will also come true, as well as what her fifth is, you'll have to buy volume 2. Unethically this isn't mentioned anywhere on the cover. Buying this you'd assume it's a standalone read.

i thought this was a very nice little manga series. i give it 4 stars only because i really think volume 2 didn't give any real resolution. i also give it 4 stars because i felt that the main character has great relateability. wish there had been a third volume, but i highly reccomend. i think it's a lot better than the manga series they did based off Courtney Love.
