Realistic, Thoughtful and Helpful
By Alexis
Right from the start, you can tell that this author has a realistic perspective on how hard it is to walk away from alcohol. Instead of falsely representing a "cure" for problem drinkers/alcoholics, she offers you a choice to start easy by "taking a break" from alcohol for 7 days. In my opinion, the 7 day break is a fantastically real option for anyone who wants to try to stop drinking, but is overwhelmed by the idea of 30/60/90 days sober, much less the idea of not drinking FOREVER. All she asks is that you try not drinking for 7 days. It's hard, but doable, and you're not focused too far into the future. I thought this was a great idea. An achievable concept, even for someone who drinks every day.
The author does a fine job at balancing personal experience and guidelines/tips for making your 7 day break as easy as possible. Reading her personal experiences, and being able to relate to them was incredibly helpful b/c I saw a lot of my behavior in her. It gave me a feeling that I'm not alone. Her tips on how to combat boredom and routine were very helpful b/c there were times when not drinking was starting to get the better of me.
The best part of the book is that the chapters are broken into days (i.e. chapter 1 is called Day 1). Every day highlights an internal struggle you may be facing, even one you may not know you have, and how to approach it to deal with it. She gives you ideas on how to communicate with friends and family if you decide to stick with your "break." And at the end of every chapter/day, there are "Questions to Consider." This element was by far the most important and helpful part of the book. These questions are tough, no doubt about it. The answers you have for them may even be tougher; hard to admit to yourself, even...but they are important to your quest for sobriety. Trust me. Answering her questions really made think about why I was drinking, what I was getting from it (NOTHING!), how my life has changed b/c of drinking, and how I can try to move forward once I've stopped drinking. Simply put...these questions, and what you will learn about yourself by answering them honestly, can change not only your perspective on drinking, but can change your life.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone struggling with alcohol addiction/dependency. 7 days is attainable. If you can learn something about yourself along the way, even better. I think that 7 days is just enough to see what your life could be like if you choose to stick with your "break." I have chosen to stick with it, and as of today I am 12 days sober. It doesn't seem like a lot, but I never thought I could do the 7. I do feel better. I sleep better. I look better. And finally, I'm excited to see where sobriety takes me. It hasn't been easy, but this book has made it easier.

No epiphanies?
By Amazon Customer
Ms. Bell begins her book by claiming that there are no epiphanies more than once. In bold type. Mine happened on "Day 5". As a wine industry insider she used day 5 to write about the environmental impacts of wineries and vintner practices. Drowning finches? Draining rivers so the trout kill themselves trying to spawn? And this in California! The same state that won't allow almond growers (almonds are actually food, remember) sufficient irrigation! As a farm girl I should have known, or at least guessed, that the agricultural practices were typical corporate ag. We can somewhat forgive the destruction of habitat for food. I can't forgive drowning finches. I can't get the image of the trout out of my mind.
I started reading after my typical 2 glasses of wine one evening. Sometimes the two would become three. I've been trying to quit for years. Each "day" of this book brings either new revelations or at least new ways of looking at the problem of alcoholism. Each day will ring a bell for different readers, I think. For me it was the animals and the land.

Great book... Horrible editing
By Fred O.
I am sorry that I can't give this book the 5 stars it deserves but the book needs some really serious editing. Maybe Amazon knows this and that is why it is so cheaply priced even though it is a really a good read. Words are either missing or "that" is used in place of "than"; "because" in place of "become", etc. I am pulling those illustrations from memory and if they are not correct, they serve to illustrate the point.
I chose to read it simply because I am reading anything about alcohol addiction, recovery and relapse prevention. I have finally embraced the notion that I can no longer have even one drink if I want to enjoy the remainder of my life so I ignore the part about it "only being 7 days". Everything else is spot on and I thank Meredith for sharing her experiences. (I hope that didn't sound too AA)
