Frustrating and convoluted text coupled with terrible layout and design.

Difficult to read., I found this textbook to be exasperating, difficult to follow, and poorly laid out. It made a mathematical and logical topic extremely hard to understand. The author dives into explanations, confusing the student, only to offer simple explanations in later chapters. It is as though he believes that one must walk through fire in order to understand a topic. Also, examples are constantly on different pages than the page from which they are cited. So, expect constant page flipping. I found this book to be frustrating.

An okay text

This text book is massive and it wouldn't bother me except that it doesn't need to be so big. It looks like it was formatted for 8x11 sheets of paper in word and no one optimized the book for print format. We are using the labs that go with the book extensively and some of those contain obvious errors. The lab also seems to vary between ultra simplistic (explaining how to click and drag with a mouse) to skipping a few steps hoping that you catch on. The book itself is decent but I have used better books for database courses in the past. One plus is that the book explains how to use both Oracle and Access so you get a feel for two different platforms at the same time.

Paige Rawl was an ordinary girl.

Cheerleader, soccer player, honor roll student. One of the good kids at her middle school.

Then, on an unremarkable day, Paige disclosed the one thing that made her "different": her HIV-positive status.

About the Author

Paige Rawl is an accomplished speaker and an inspirational figure for the tens of thousands of kids to whom she has spoken. Today, Paige is a national youth advocate, antibullying crusader, and powerful HIV/AIDS educator. Paige has been featured in multiple national media outlets, including USA Today, People magazine, Seventeen magazine, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, the Huffington Post, and Poz magazine. Since Paige was eight years old, she has participated enthusiastically in pageants. Most recently, Paige was Miss Indiana Teen Essence 2011 and Miss Indiana High School America 2012. She is currently a student at Ball State University, where she plans to study molecular biology.

Ali Benjamin's work has appeared in print, online, and on television. She lives with her family in rural Massachusetts.

Should be required reading in middle school. Empowering to young people who want to make a difference.

Paige Rawl is an all-American girl- popular, an "A" student, a cheerleader, beauty-pageant winner and issomeone who had been born with HIV, stabilized by a good regime of medication. Life was good. Until she told her best friend, while trying to reassure her that every family had health issues. Hours later her middle school was engaged in a massive bullying orgy that continued unabated for years. When cheerleading on the top of a pyramid formation, shouts of "P-AIDS" her hated nickname, distracted her and caused a serious fall. Her principal and counselor refused to get involved with her "drama", her soccer coach who looked at her confidential files suggested using her disease to scare the other team. There were daily taunts in the hall, vicious notes on her locker and even her boyfriend was told to drop her incessantly.

There were no attempts to stop the bullying, to require good character on the part of her schoolmates or to educate them about HIV and its low possibility of transmission. It almost cost her her life, as bullying has done to so many.

She met others who were much worse off- a boy who had been injected with HIV-tainted blood by his father who didn't want to pay child support, a gay teen who was beat up by bullies and whose religious family couldn't accept him, girls who were slut-shamed after being raped. Inspired by the Ryan White story, she got angry and tried suing the school for not providing a safe environment. And she started speaking out nationally against bullying and is known for her work today.

This autobiography should be required reading for middle school students, touching on such themes as moral character, bullying, HIV-AIDS and making a difference in the world.

Our child has no idea what happened with these friends, because our child never got to know them, so this time we were able to shield our dear one from that hurt. I know that won't always be the case, though. So in some ways, I think that rejection was a good lesson for us to learn. I won't ever know what it's like to be judged or bullied for having HIV, but that experience was the closest thing to it. In losing those friends who wouldn't or couldn't understand that HIV was no risk to them or their children, we shared in the pain that people like our child and like Paige Rawl face.

Paige was just a kid with a chronic condition, having no idea that HIV carried any more stigma than her diagnosis of asthma. She was an A+ student, a cheerleader, an all around good kid. Then she shared her status with her best friend - her first best friend - and everything changed. That girl told everyone, and Paige was called PAIDS, mocked in the halls, and - in the most heartbreaking sections - let down by the very adults who should have protected her: her school counselor, administrators, and soccer coach, the last of whom joked that they could use Paige's status as an advantage on the soccer field because opposing teams would be scared of catching AIDS from her. I'm so thankful for Paige's mother, who never once doubted her and who understood in a deeper way that I will because Paige's mother is also HIV+. But even the love of a mother isn't enough sometimes, as the bullying got so bad that Paige was having seizures from the stress and cutting herself as a coping mechanism and dropping out of school to be homeschooled instead and then attempting suicide. Thank God that she didn't succeed in that attempt, because her adversity has shaped her into a powerful advocate for anti-bullying efforts and for HIV/AIDS awareness, but as a mama and former public school educator, I ache for what she had to go through.

To be honest, while this book ends in a "Positive" way, it broke my heart more than it lifted it up. But I think that's a good thing, because it inspires me to continue to educate others in hopes that my child will grow up in a more accepting world than Paige did. As she writes in the preface, "But I was beginning to realize that sometimes a person doesn't get to choose whether she joins or fights. Sometimes the joining is impossible, sometimes the fight chooses you. The universe plucks you - you, specifically - out of all those souls out there and hands you something that makes fitting in and going with the flow utterly out of the question." So it was for Paige. And so it is for me, as I stand with her as an ally and an advocate for my child and countless more.

Staying POSITIVE!

This book exceeded all of my expectations.
Every.
Single.

I am so impressed and touched by this story.

Paige Rawl was born HIV positive. She has always taken medication at the same time other children eat breakfast, and gone to doctor's appointments when other children were playing sports. Paige never seemed to have a problem with this, because for most of her childhood, Paige did not know of her HIV status.

But times have changed for Paige. She was beginning middle school, meaning that a new reputation had to be created and upheld. This means that Paige would enter several beauty pageants, attend class lock-ins and dances, and make new friends. But one thing that Paige might not have expected, is the disastrous and painful aftermath of informing Yazmin - a friend she had known for the majority of her life - of her HIV status. She could have never imagined what would happen next.

POSITIVE is a story, but most importantly, it is Paige's story. POSITIVE is a story about illness, bullying and a lack of acceptance, but POSITIVE is also a story about new hope when Paige believed there was none, new and better experiences when Paige thought she couldn't survive anymore, and reversing stereotypes when Paige was invited to speak at several HIV-centered events. POSITIVE is the story about change, inspiration and hope. POSITIVE is just that, remaining positive when everything else seems to crumble. That is what Paige does best.

Paige Rawl has an exceptional writing style and a way with words. Her story clicks with me and resonates with me so much that I finished the entire memoir in one day. I never wanted to put this book down, and I never wanted the telling of her story to end. Paige uses the perfect amount of details and life events within her story that it feels like the reader was on the journey with her.

Perhaps this was because all of this drama unfolded in middle school, or just the sense that all of this drama unfolded at all, but I clicked with Paige instantly. I wanted to scream at her counselor when she was told just to stop the drama and deny her HIV status. I wanted to scream when Paige was told that no one believed that she was framed when Yazmin found that note on her locker. I also wanted to run and support her when Yazmin's sister threw a McDonald's drink at her.

I really loved this book, because it is not just a story. It was, is, and will be Paige'sstory. This is a book about life turning upside-down, broken relationships, and life throwing you under the bus. This book is not just about an HIV status. This book is about being POSITIVE.

Building on biographies by Richard Brookhiser and Willard Sterne Randall, Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton provides what may be the most comprehensive modern examination of the often overlooked Founding Father. From the start, Chernow argues that Hamilton’s premature death at age 49 left his record to be reinterpreted and even re-written by his more long-lived enemies, among them: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe. Hamilton’s achievements as first Secretary of the Treasury, co-author of The Federalist Papers, and member of the Constitutional Convention were clouded after his death by strident claims that he was an arrogant, self-serving monarchist. Chernow delves into the almost 22,000 pages of letters, manuscripts, and articles that make up Hamilton’s legacy to reveal a man with a sophisticated intellect, a romantic spirit, and a late-blooming religiosity.

One fault of the book, is that Chernow is so convinced of Hamilton’s excellence that his narrative sometimes becomes hagiographic. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Chernow’s account of the infamous duel between Hamilton and Aaron Burr in 1804. He describes Hamilton’s final hours as pious, while Burr, Jefferson, and Adams achieve an almost cartoonish villainy at the news of Hamilton’s passing.

A defender of the union against New England secession and an opponent of slavery, Hamilton has a special appeal to modern sensibilities. Chernow argues that in contrast to Jefferson and Washington’s now outmoded agrarian idealism, Hamilton was "the prophet of the capitalist revolution" and the true forebear of modern America. After hulking works on J.P. Morgan, the Warburgs and John D. Rockefeller, what other grandee of American finance was left for Chernow's overflowing pen than the one who puts the others in the shade? Alexander Hamilton (1755–1804) created public finance in the United States. In fact, it's arguable that without Hamilton's political and financial strategic brilliance, the United States might not have survived beyond its early years. Chernow's achievement is to give us a biography commensurate with Hamilton's character, as well as the full, complex context of his unflaggingly active life. Possessing the most powerful (though not the most profound) intelligence of his gifted contemporaries, Hamilton rose from Caribbean bastardy through military service in Washington's circle to historic importance at an early age and then, in a new era of partisan politics, gradually lost his political bearings. Chernow makes fresh contributions to Hamiltoniana: no one has discovered so much about Hamilton's illegitimate origins and harrowed youth; few have been so taken by Hamilton's long-suffering, loving wife, Eliza. Jefferson is the "apostle of liberty," the author of our most sacred national document, and his idealism, though flawed, continues to inspire us. And Alexander Hamilton? He inspires admiration for his financial acumen and respect for his drive to rise above the genteel poverty of his youth. Yet he seldom is accorded the affection reserved for some of our national icons. But as Chernow's comprehensive and superbly written biography makes clear, Hamilton was at least as influential as any of our Founding Fathers in shaping our national institutions and political culture. He was the driving force behind the calling of the Constitutional Convention, and he was instrumental in overcoming opposition to ratification. In Washington's cabinet, he consistently promoted a national perspective while placing our economy on a sound financial footing. Chernow, who has previously written biographies of J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, acknowledges Hamilton's arrogance, his bouts of self-pity, and his penchant for cynical manipulation. But this self-made man was capable of great compassion and was consistently outraged by the institution of slavery. Full and well-drawn portrait of Hamilton; less so for his opponents

This book is a beautifully rendered portrait of Hamilton, both his public life and his private life. As so many other reviewers have noted, the book is an example of first-rate biographical research and most of the book is well-written.

Up to chapter 16, “Dr. Pangloss,” the story is superbly told. But, when Thomas Jefferson enters Hamilton’s life, much of the book becomes a contrast between Hamilton, who had his own well-documented personal failings, with Jefferson who, if the text is to be believed, had nothing but personal failings. Jefferson is variously described as hypocritical, duplicitous and conniving. Undoubtedly, Jefferson fit much of this description but so did Hamilton in their Federalist-Republican (anti-Federalist) feud in the 1790’s. What bothered me was the unrelenting negative portrayal of Jefferson, Madison (after 1790) and John Adams. Hamilton is portrayed accurately and fully as a brilliant and decent man with some major flaws. Jefferson and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Madison and Adams, are portrayed as deeply flawed individuals who happened to have a few good points. The language reinforces this. If one were to count the negatively loaded adjectives and verbs accorded to Hamilton’s three main opponents, they would vastly outnumber any positive linguistic connotations. In order to sharpen Hamilton’s character portrayal, the image that Chernow gives of Hamilton’s opponents is, given other biographies of these men, less than just.

The name-calling, smear campaigns and character assassinations in the 1790’s are appalling (but less so given the 2016 Presidential campaign). However, a dozen years after independence and only a few years after the Constitution was ratified, the fears of the anti-Federalists were real ones. Jefferson’s and Madison’s hypocrisy and the foibles of John Adam’s personality notwithstanding, the concerns expressed were often genuine ones at that time about what kind of country the United States would be and how the Constitution should be interpreted. The possibility that the Jeffersonians may have had a point gets lost in Chernow’s constant barrage of claims about duplicity, hypocrisy and malevolent intentions.

So I thought this was a brilliant portrayal of the man who founded our economic and, to a large extent, our political system. The portrayal of Aaron Burr is excellent and the factors leading up to the duel are gripping. But the mid-section of the book would have been even stronger if Chernow had presented Hamilton’s foes in a fuller, less negatively charged light.

My Favorite Founder

I thought I knew my Founding Fathers. I actually had no idea about Hamilton, but was saving my favorite FF for last I guess. Our country was heading for civil war from the very beginning based on slave/free, rural/urban, ag/industrial, centrist/states, British/French differences. Washington set the tone, but Hamilton set the course for the America which has actually occurred. The partisan virulence and libelous attacks undid this elegant, street-fighting genius. Fantastic story.

You Heard the Musical Now Read the Book

I had read Chernows's Washington Biography, (which was phenomenal), so after getting caught up in the Hamilton musical hype along with my teenage daughters I had to read this one!

The amount of information that the author pulls together for a man that lived two centuries ago is amazing. As with Washington's biography, he paints a portrait of a man full of passion, faults and heroic deeds, that makes the way we approach and live life look utterly lame. Foe instance, I don't know what the current Treasury Secretary was doing when he was in his twenties, but I am certain that he wasn't leading midnight bayonet charges in a revolution!

The more you learn about our founders, the more you have to admire them and realize that there may never again be another time where a group of men of such great courage, intelligence, wisdom and moral conviction will ever be together at the same time at such a pivotal time in history. Alexander Hamilton belongs to that group of men and Chernow tells his story.

Hendrik Van Loon's books should be in every school library. They are so beautifully written and open a window on the beginnings of music and art in a very interesting and easy to read style.His story of the early Dutch navigators is just as readable today as when it was first printed.

Small but great

Gave this to my grandaughter who is in her 1st year of guitar. It seemed a bit pricy as it is very short-but it has lots of good information in it in understandable ways for beginners and some standard Christmas music. If you were to buy each of these songs separately as sheet music it would have been even more expensiive so all in all the cost is okay.
My grandaughter loves the book and her teacher approved as well. Yes would recommend

Some songs just don't sound right with the chords used. It is easy to play most songs and the print is easy to read in poor lighting. It's a good place to start and motivates new players to practice more.
