Bought this book for work related reasons...and now I'm realizing that
this ONE Guide to California Govt. takes the place of many different
(outdated) publications! I love that it's easy to find the right answer to
all kinds of questions about how our state government works. And the book
goes beyond, by pointing you to solid web sources ! something I trust
from the League of Women Voters.

Peter Clough is the former Head of Psychology at Hull University and is recognized as a leading applied academic authority in this field. About the Author
William J. Cavanaugh, FASA, INCE (Bd. Cert.), is a founding partner and senior principal emeritus of Cavanaugh Tocci Associates, Inc., an acoustical consulting firm based in Sudbury, Massachusetts. His distinguished career as an acoustical consultant to the world's leading architectural and engineering firms and as a teacher at architectural schools spans more than four decades. He has served as president of both the National Council of Acoustical Consultants and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. He was awarded the prestigious Wallace Clement Sabine Medal, the Acoustical Society of America's highest honor in architectural acoustics, in 2006.

Gregory C. Tocci, FASA, INCE (Bd. Cert.), a registered professional engineer, is founding partner, president, and chief executive officer of Cavanaugh Tocci Associates, Inc. His extensive background and experience as a mechanical engineer brings important insights to solving mechanical system noise and structural vibration problems in buildings. He has served as president of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, and is a co-chair of American National Standards Institute Committee S12 Noise, Working Group 44 on Speech Privacy.

Joseph A. Wilkes, FAIA, is a registered architect and the editor of the five-volume Encyclopedia of Architecture (Wiley). He has taught at the schools of architecture at the University of Florida and the University of Maryland and has served on the Building Research Advisory Board of the National Academy of Sciences.

Beautifully written and incredibly helpful

I'm a designer who has always wished to be a better writer. I've read tons of blog posts, half-read academic-writerly books that made me feel like I wasn't paying enough attention in college, and purchased in earnest how-to's that serve mostly as dust curation tools for my shelf. Nothing has ever really stuck.

This is the first book on writing I've read that is practical, approachable, and project oriented. I was able to understand processes that make going about writing less intimidating and more clear. I think most importantly it's given me structured ways to approach what I write and think about what I'm communicating. Nicole and Kate have written a great book that is immensely helpful and fun to read. Thank you!

There needs to be more books like this.

This book is beautiful, clear and refreshing. One of the things I really appreciate is the small illustrations throughout the book that allow the mind to rest while absorbing their concepts. I appreciate the background of both of the authors and how one works freelance and so has exposure to lots of businesses, while the other works for MailChimp and understands working inside of a larger innovative company.

The web moves so fast that it's hard to keep up with the latest designs and best practices. From what I've seen, the majority of the most current best practices are in blog posts, and some are in books from A List Apart and Smashing Magazine - but there's not enough out there. I couldn't find any design books on flat web design updated for 2014, but scores of blog posts. What makes this book stand out is that it's current, written by professionals, concise and easy to grasp the concepts, and just beautiful through and through. I hope the authors continue to write and can inspire designers in their field to create books like this.

Very readable

I'm not an Aerospace Engineer, my application was more in in-line with RC use and maybe even kit construction, but I found this book to be quite readable. I would say the best feature was the language use, it never felt like you were being talked down to (like another Aerospace book that I tried to read which will go unmentioned) or overwhelmed with mathematical proofs. Concepts were well explained, and I learned a bit. I found much useful info in this book even though Jet aircraft design was not applicable to me. But given how all of the information was presented the book was at least interesting enough to read in its entirety.

As been pointed out by others, there is not much talk of airfoils and many specifics of piston aircraft.

Incredibly useful

Very useful design information that was missing from my college aerospace education, which focused mostly on analysis. Lots of practical tips and considerations. I particularly like chapter 7 on lofting. The description of conic lofting is very well written and not available in any of my other references. I have used this technique several times since buying the book. Both for modeling existing parts in order to perform finite element anlysis, and for designing new parts for production.

This, like the others, in the series are brilliant

I have used the Cambodian-English picture dictionary for teaching both English to Khmer speakers and Khmer to English speakers. As a tool for building vocabulary and provoking free conversation on a one-to-one basis, there can be few better. As a self teaching tool it is also invaluable. Above all it is clear, accurate and attractive to work with.

Excellent reference material for Khmer speakers

This book is a useful reference for teaching Khmer speaking people to learn English. It is successful in helping to form that mental bond between a word and the object it belongs to with simple to understand pictures. Since the caption of the picture is in both English and Khmer, both speakers can communicate to each other. I am even learning words that I had not known before because my student is teaching me how to say them (I do not know how to read Khmer).

I especially like how this book not only instructs a person on English, but also introduces the student to several facets of American life such as holidays, some history, etc.

But a book like this should only be used for Khmer speakers that possess some English literacy or, if not, then an English speaking person should be present. This book cannot and should not be used as a self-teaching English book. While a good book, it is structured in a way that it would fit better in a classroom rather than as a self-teaching study.

Furthermore, this is not a dictionary, so do not take this with you if you plan on visiting Cambodia. However, I do not see many illustrated books on teaching English to Khmer speakers as well written as this one. A major help if you are in the same boat as I am.

I kept waiting for her to leave him

The hero is a cold,mean brute who does not deserve his gentle wife Kassia.He should have been made to marry Joanna the shrewish woman he was betrothed to.I couldn't get past Graelam raping Kassia,I really couldn't.I know this is medieval England and women were more or less treated like chattel,but come on.Kassia is a gentle sweet girl who does everything to please this philandering,brute of a man.He sleeps with one of the servants after he marries Kassia, when she confronts him he threatens to beat and rape her which he had already done(I shuddered again right there).There's not one but two women undermining Kassia's authority and she sits back and takes this,please!The servants and his own soldiers abhor his treatment of Kassia throughout the book.I prayed for her to runaway with Dienwald or for Guy to fall in love with her and take her away from Graelam.The women who made Kassialife hell were rewarded for their treatment of her,they are never made to pay for what they did to her which is another thing that put me off this book.I like to see the heroine giving as good as she gets even if she's not a particularly strong character.Kassia was far too soft and gentle for this brute as a result he walked all over her quite literally.I wanted him to really suffer for his treatment of her which he didn't,this is why I bothered to finish this book for him to get his comeuppance which hedidn't.She capitulated far too easily in the end when he came to get her at her father's castle.I know that he's a warrior but didn't knights have a chivalric code?

I know Catherine Coulter treads a not so fine line, but in this case her 'hero' is a serial rapist, who, when unduly angered by women, takes them by force. He is consistently awful to his wife and then in the last 10 pages, for no apparent reason, totally changes his tack and decides to love her.
I'm never really sure why she loves him, aside from his physical strength, for there is little that is admirable or lovable about him. This is not a tortured soul looking for healing through love, this is a cruel, quite stupid man who raped a woman in a previous novel, and then rapes his wife in this one.
This one goes straight into the resale pile.

I'm a big Coulter fan, but...

I really hate novels where there's some nasty person who has everybody convinced she's a helpless little victim and thereby makes trouble for the heroine. I really hate novels where the hero RAPES the heroine! I REALLY hate novels where the heroine falls in love with a so-called hero who's being high-handed, brutal, and unfaithful to her. What kind of idiot does that make her? If you agree with me that Patient Griselda should have stuck a knife in her husband's wizend little heart, then you probably won't like this book either. Apologies to Catherine, but I like her later books a lot better.
