About the Author

Chittaranjan Ray is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Interim Director of the Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii. Prior to joining the University of Hawaii, he worked as a research scientist at the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University. He was also employed as a staff engineer in the firm of Geraghty & Miller, Inc. in Hackensack, New Jersey (USA) conducting hazardous waste site investigation and water supply development for communities. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has published 5 books, over 100 scholarly papers, and many technical papers. His research work has been funded by the US National Science Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Defense, and other agencies.

Ravi K. Jain is Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific. Prior to this appointment, he has held research, faculty, and administrative positions at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Cincinnati. He received degrees in civil engineering (BS, MSCE) from California State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. He has directed major research programs for the US department of Defense and has served as chairman of the Environmental Engineering Research Council, ASCE. He is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, a fellow of ASCE, and a fellow of AAAS. He has been a Littauer fellow at Harvard University and a fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University. He has published 14 books, over 150 scholarly papers and technical reports, and has received many awards and honors including the US Army’s highest research award and was a recipient of the NSPE Founders Gold Medal and named Federal Engineering of the Year for 1989.

This book contains an excellent review of sustainable drinking water practices, particularly those that are suitable in developing countries. Advancement of effective and reliable drinking water systems is a vital issue with global importance. In this book consideration is given to various treatment technologies that are discussed and vividly described including riverbank filtration, solar pasteurization, membrane desalinization, and solar distillation. In addition, chemical and energy use is discussed as well as the resources, infrastructure, and manpower needed to implement various water systems. Case studies are introduced, which are especially helpful for understanding the appropriate use of the technologies presented. The case studies include detailed descriptions and compilations of project results. Throughout the book schematics, photos, and design calculations are provided to provide guidance to those considering these technologies. Additionally, the entire book has a sustainability focus with discussion on project review and technology decision-making processes with an emphasis on quantifying performance metrics.

Drinking water is a limited resource. This book, "Drinking Water Treatment - Focusing on Appropriate Technology and Sustainability", compares and contrasts different drinking water treatment technologies with an overarching goal to limit the human environmental footprint while preserving a clean water supply for further generations. The book goes into great detail discussing the pros and cons of membrane desalination, riverbank filtration, solar pasteurization and distillation. Throughout the text authors provide an ample amount of examples from around the globe on applications of these technologies in real-world situations.

It is a fascinating and effective book which engages a reader from the introductory chapter. Although being a non-engineer, I found the text easy to follow while extremely informative in context. The text is well referenced and reflective of current research and expert thinking. I can highly recommend this book for anyone interested in drinking water treatment technologies and sustainability. It provides truly comprehensive overview and can be used as a very valuable reference.

This book contains full of valuable information on solar pasteurization, membrane desalination, natural or riverbank filtration, and solar distillation, which are applicable to both developing and developed countries. The discussions on each technology are very useful and it is a very valuable reference. The book is coherent, very well organized, and filled with excellent tables and graphs. I highly recommend this publication for anyone interested in drinking water treatment.

excellent resource for understanding how to work with D3 in Angular

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with D3. I continue to be very impressed with what it can do -- the ability to create dynamic, really immersive data experiences is fantastic. But, despite several books on D3 itself, I've continued to be frustrated with how to integrate it into a web framework. If your story is similar to mine, then you'll find that this is an excellent book. It starts with reminders about D3, many readers may know that already. In addition, there is some review of Angular, but that is largely already assumed. Thus, the target audience is those, similar to my entry point, that want to understand how to work with D3 in the Angular framework.

For me the really important part of the book started with chapter 4 and went to the end. The author's description of how to build directives containing D3 and how to do unit testing with it, I found really valuable. A previous reviewer found the unit testing (Karma and Protractor) to be distracting. I thought it good to have it described at length and easy to read around if you are already familiar with the unit testing approaches and how to set them up.

In some ways you can view the entire book as a commentary on the code base being built up to the very end. I like this way of structuring a code-book, since you can see into and understand the final product with greater precision and have something that you can build on at the end. I've many books that teach small snippets and/or give the theory, but leave the larger code examples to someone else. The final project, described in sufficient detail to understand how to move data into the system, how to process the data, how to manage animations, and how to make the interactions dynamic is the visual understanding of a server log. This example can be easily extended to other domains, and so I felt was both transparent and one with real 'legs' for use in other settings.

So, in sum, if you have been looking for a good book, or some type of code-based tutorial, on how to use D3 in Angular to get something non-trivial done, this is the one to get.

If you want get started with data visualization in AngularJS, this is the guide for it

The book provides a good introduction to integrate D3 into AngularJS with many step-by-step examples. If you are familiar with AngularJS and want to integrate data visualization into applications this book is a good starting point. After completing the book you have some working chart directives that can be easily extended to more advanced directives.

I like the style in which the book is written: For every topic the theoretical approach is briefly explained at the beginning, followed by step-by-step discussions of the practical usage with code samples. This makes the book easy to read and allows you to skip sections if you are already familiar with the content.

In my opinion most of the content has an appropriate length and depth, but Chapter 4 covers unit and E2E testing basics with too much details. This makes the chapter a little bit hard to read. The author assumes that the reader is familiar with AngularJS basics, and in my opinion these fundamentals include proper testing.
Another point of criticism is the focus on the mouse as input device and a layout that is primarily designed for desktop views. I missed some touch examples with responsive design. But maybe this exceeds the scope of the book.

I recommend the book for every web developer who is familiar with AngularJS and wants to add data visualization to their projects. One do not necessarily need to know D3.js, the book will help you get started with the library. If you already use D3.js, you can use the basic sections to refresh your knowledge.

This book, although small, is full of great information. It covers just about everything you need to know to start trading penny stocks well! Many trading books have a lot of fluff but despite it's size this book has just as much meat (or more) as one twice its size. The author is an experienced penny stock trader, not some 'guru' who decided he knows how to trade pennystocks and doesn't have experience. You can find him in the chat room on Stockhideout almost any trading day, always with picks, and practicing what he preaches in this book.

Further, unlike some books in the genre, this isn't an ad you have to pay for (some books don't tell you anything other than subscribe to my service and THEN you'll know!), this book has the information you seek if you would like to trade penny stocks. A very great book that has helped me a lot. 5/5.

Penny Stocks, are disigned for failure!!!.....YOUR Failure, especially!!

Wow, my trading was really starting to suffer....until I got this book!! After reading it, my trading started to turn around. My acct began to grow, as well as my confidence. I'm finally on my way to being financially independent, and couldn't be happier!! I'm finally able to have that big house on the water, that nice boat out on the dock, and surrounded by the finer things in life.
...and the women!!!....my god the women!!!....no more getting railroaded, by the Trannys for "this guy"!!
The secret to my success you ask???
I read/studied EVERY word of this fine publication.....and did the Polar Opposite of everything it said.
